CLCF Co-Lead Rafael Grohmann is teaching a course on Media Workers and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Media Studies Program at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). The course examines how generative AI is transforming labour in media and cultural industries, foregrounding workers’ experiences and power across creativity and AI, the hidden labour of data work, global AI value chains and infrastructures (including cloud and data centres), intellectual property and policy, worker-led AI governance, and cooperative/solidarity approaches to AI.
Students will produce media projects and academic research that connect scholarly analysis with public-facing communication. Guest speakers include Dorothy Wong (advertising professional; Hong Kong & Mars Media Academy), Maurice Jones (Concordia University, artist), Wilfred Yang Wang (University of Melbourne), Fabio Azevedo (Dublagem Viva, Brazil), and CLCF researchers Daphne Idiz and Lauren Knight. This course is supported by a $2,600 award from the University of Toronto’s Global Classrooms Funding Initiative, enabling guest engagements and shared resources that link the classroom to wider debates on creative labour and AI.
