Daphne Idiz

CLCF Co-Director & Postdoctoral Fellow

Daphne Rena Idiz (she/her) is a Co-Director of the Creative Labour and Critical Futures (CLCF) cluster and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). Daphne obtained her PhD in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, which focused on how global streaming giants reshape European cultural production. Her research interests include media industries, production cultures, streaming, and cultural policy. At CLCF, Daphne is building on her previous work to examine how screenwriters are negotiating AI. Specifically, she is investigating how this connects to pre-existing challenges around intellectual property rights and fair remuneration, power asymmetries between cultural producers and big tech companies, and top-down (policy) and bottom-up (collective action) governance in the media industries.

Her work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Digital Media & PolicyCritical Studies in Television, the International Journal of Communication and Media, Culture & Society. She contributed to the European Commission’s Study on media plurality and diversity online. She is also co-editing a forthcoming special issue for Television & New Media on “Streaming Production Cultures.”
