Assistant Professor

Hadiya Roderique is a journalist and an Assistant Professor of Journalism in the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining the department, Hadiya worked as a consultant, speaker, broadcast commentator, journalist, and lawyer. As a journalist, she focuses largely on inequity in our society, with a particular interest in race, parental bias, gender, and justice. In her work, she has examined topics such as systemic racism, Black parenthood, the criminal justice system, sexual racism, Black joy, and employment barriers faced by racialized communities. Hadiya’s research focuses on race, gender, work, and inequity in journalism. Her current research projects focus on barriers to hiring and advancement for racialized journalists, discourses of racism in media, and differences in how racialized and white reporters use language in their reporting on race and gender. As part of the CLCF, she is interested in examining how bias impacts inclusive creative futures for journalism workers, and how AI replicates and deepens existing inequalities.
