Rafael Grohmann

CLCF Co-Director & Assistant Professor

Rafael Grohmann is a Co-lead and Co-Director of the Creative Labour and Critical Futures (CLCF) cluster and an Assistant Professor of Media Studies (Critical Platform Studies) at the University of Toronto. Rafael is the leader of the DigiLabour initiative and founding editor of the Platforms & Society journal. He is a researcher of Fairwork and Platform Work Inclusion Living Lab projects. Rafael held visiting and fellowships appointment with Weizenbaum Institute, Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies (University of Toronto) and University of Sao Paulo. He published on digital labour platforms, workers’ organizing, data work and platform cooperativism in academic outlets such as Big Data & Society, New Media & Society, Social Media + Society and International Journal of Communication. He also has policy-oriented and community-oriented research with policy makers in Brazil, and co-operatives and social movements in Brazil and Argentina.

For CLCF, I will focus on how workers in the cultural sector are organizing collectively against and with AI. I’ll be engaging with unions, associations and co-operatives in sectors such as music, audiovisual and games in order to understand how they are learning to bargain around AI, and are creating alternatives to this context.
