Tanner Mirrlees
Tanner Mirrlees is a Professor of Communication and Digital Media Studies (CDMS) at Ontario Tech University with a background in political economy of communications, critical cultural studies, and technology & society studies. Mirrlees is the author, co-author or co-editor of books and volumes including The Television Reader (2012), Global Entertainment Media: Between Cultural Imperialism and Cultural Globalization (2013), Media, Technology, and the Culture of Militarism (2014), Hearts and Mines: The US Empire’s Cultural Industry (2016), EdTech Inc.: Selling, Automating and Globalizing Higher Education in the Digital Age (2019), Media Imperialism: Continuity and Change (2020), Work in the Digital Media and Entertainment Industries: A Critical Introduction (2025), and Green Dreams: Why Technology Can’t Save the World (2027). For CLCF, Mirrlees focuses on AI and creative labour in the entertainment industries, as well as how left-wing activist groups, social movements, and artists tactically deploy AI for strategic political communication and cultural resistance.
